Tip No. 215

Q. I have an interview with Prudential next week. The problem I have is they want 10 years of employment history. I have worked as a Bookkeeper since July of 2002. I have not had another steady job since 1998 when I was terminated for personal reasons. I was unemployed for a year and a half after that. How can I explain the gap during my interview.

A. Regarding your termination from your prior company, you might consider contacting them to find out what information, if any, will be given to companies who will be calling to check your employment history. Some companies will only provide the information that you worked there and the dates you were employed; others will provide this information and also will state your eligibility for re-employment. As for the 1 and 1/2 year gap in your employment, if asked about it during the interview you can state that you were unemployed to attend to personal matters, but that these matters have been successfully resolved, as evidenced by the fact that you have been employed as a bookkeeper since July of 2002. You want to impart to the prospective employer that you are ready and eager to assume the new responsibilities, for which you are interviewing for at their company.

Good luck to you in your new job search.
