Tip No. 214

Q. Can you give me some brief pointers on how to be successful in a job search?

A. Sure! Here’s our short and sweet version:

• Recognize and abandon the negative attitudes that hinder job hunting

• Don’t search for jobs. Identify needs-what employers need-and create ways to satisfy those needs

• Identify the employers that interest you and research their values and mission statement, along with any posted job openings, to try to determine if these employers are likely to be interested in you

• Identify and appeal to the target employer’s self interest by matching your qualifications to their stated requirements, values, mission or needs

• Utilize as many proactive strategies as possible. If you chose to use reactive strategies, do so only as an adjunct to the proactive ones.

• Every employer contact is an opportunity. Identify your transferable skills and translate your good traits into marketable skills.

• Invest time now in analyzing what you can do to make yourself more marketable (research on the web to learn if your compensation goals in line with current compensation rates at a variety of companies by going to salary.com; be sure your job title reflect the type of job you would like to have; consider updating your resume; learn if you need to brush up your skills, and so on). Remember, these activities should not just be for the present, but to prepare you continually market yourself for a lifetime of optimum employment
