Tip No. 213

Q. I am in a job earning good money and benefits, but I don’t like it very much and think I can do better. Am I crazy to think about leaving?

A. Most employers neither promise, nor require, a lifetime commitment. In the past, it was common for a person to accept a job with a company, dedicate him/herself to that job or others within the organization, and stay with the same employer until the retirement party.

For the past ten years, this has been changing and the employee/employer relationship has reflected a change in committment. Whether regrettable or not, the new order of the business world encourages experimentation, personal growth, and creative risk-taking. Individuals generally are more productive when they enjoy what they do, which is a plus to the organizations for which they work. If you are very unhappy in your position and you have talked to your supervisor about possible remedies which have not worked, it might be best for you and the organization for you to look elsewhere.
