Tip No. 195

Q. How do I pick a recruiter to work with?

A. Your best bet are those recruiting firms that have been placing professionals in your industry with similar backgrounds to yours because they are more likely to have the resources and industry contacts to help you. A great place to begin is to ask for a referral from someone in your field who knows of or has worked with a recruiter who has placed others in your area of specialization. Another good source of referrals for specialized recruiters are professional societies and their publications. Once you have referrals, find a recruiter you feel comfortable with and confident of. This is important because a successful relationship with a recruiter can gain you useful advice now and provide you with placement assistance later, whether or not they have a fitting opportunity to place you in right now.
