Tip No. 191
Q. I seem to get a lot of interviews, but no job offers. I have been reading about establishing rapport with interviewers and wonder why this is important. It seems ones credentials should be the deciding factor in the hiring process.
A. On the surface it might seem that skills and credentials should triumph over rapport. However, remember that rapport is the ability to bring harmony, conformity, and accord to relationships. Establishing rapport with the interviewer is your first opportunity to develop rapport with individuals who work for your prospective employer. If you fail to establish rapport in the interview, the interviewer likely will feel you will not have the ability to do this with your coworkers. This impression will influence your success as the interviewer may feel that a lack of interest in establishing rapport might translate into future conflicts in the workplace making for unhappy employees which no employer wants.
