Tip No. 183

Q. How do I go about asking for a raise? I am approaching my 1 year review at my first job out of college.

A. It is wise to remember that compensation frequently reflects the level of responsibility one has in any position. When asking for a raise, look to demonstrate that you have taken on more responsibility than the job description indicated. Document achievements that have surpassed the initial expectations of the organization, and request a raise in accordance with those activities. Keep your request simple and based on quantifiable achievements. Additionally, let your employer know that you are willing to take on additional responsibilities, and welcome challenges that will enhance your ability to contribute to the increased profitability of the company. Also, remember that compensation takes various forms, such as: paid parking, fuel costs, flexible hours, additional paid-time-off, etc. Remember that "even when you have a job, you should never stop looking for a better opportunity" to increase your personal growth and profitability.
