Tip No. 176
Q. I was fired from a job 6 years ago for a disagreement I had with my supervisor. I don't like revealing this on job applications because I wonder what a potential employer will think of me. What suggestions do you have?
A. One place to start is with the Human Resource department of your previous employer. Perhaps you can put you put your mind at ease by asking them specifically "what do you say about me when a potential employer calls and asks about my previous employment here?" Generally, questions to previous employers are generally focused around verifying titles and dates of employment. However, potential employers can ask about an employee being eligible for re-hire.
When faced with answering the question of termination on an application, always answer truthfully, but offer an explanation. Many individuals have been terminated for reasons beyond their control, or because they failed to perform a task that jeopardized their integrity. Employers know that here are always two sides to every story. Termination issues are more prominent than ever before, and employers are wisely considering the multiplicity of this arena.
