Tip No. 172

Q. I have gone to several networking meetings and been told that I should contact a recruiter. Any thoughts on why I should use one?

A. While it is true that only about 15% of jobs are found through recruiter services (Kennedy Information, 2002) it is important to consider the benefits of getting leads about jobs that might not be available through any other resources. However, be sure that you do not depend on a recruiter, or anyone for that matter, to "get you" a job. Always remember that the responsibility for the job search is yours.

Some reasons to use a recruiter include:

• Recruiters can help by highlighting your strengths and should be able to "introduce you." This makes rapport building easier once you get an interview.

• Recruiters will often help negotiate compensation packages-since they are often paid on the salary package that you receive. The negotiation process can be stressful and it helps to have someone looking out for your interests.

• No cost to you.
