Tip No. 171

Q. What sort of resume is considered the most useful to today's job hunter?

A. In today's job market there are two different styles of resumes that are most often used by job hunters: The Chronological Style and the Functional Style resume. Often recruiters use the "Chronological Style" resume in order to gather as much information about a candidate as possible. Typically, 2-4 pages of detailed information about the job seeker spanning over at least the last 10 years of employment and education. This is ideal for a recruiter who needs to know as much about you as he can in order to sell you to his clients. However, the more "Functional Style" of resume that many firms like Career Management use is more useful to employers. These resumes detail only the most important information about an individual in a format that allows potential employers to get the highlights about a candidate and quickly determine if he or she is qualified for a position. This is the main purpose of a resume: to get you in the door for an interview. On a resume, more is not always better. Too much information could be used to eliminate you as a candidate, rather than entice the potential employer to invite you in for an interview.
