Tip No. 162
Q. Can a prospective employer ask me to provide documentation for my current salary (W-2's, pay stubs, letter from current employer etc..)?
A. It is well within the rights of a prospective employer to ask for proof of former salary. However, it is also within your rights to decline to provide this. It may be that refusing will jeopardize a potential job offer, and this must be weighed in your decision.
We work with our clients to develop salary negotiation techniques that help them to avoid and/or make the most of this type of situation by asking questions that lead the employer to disclose their budgeted salary range for the position. With this information, a job seeker is able to make an informed decision about their own disclosure and/or job acceptance. It will be well worth your time to research the topic of salary negotiation and apply the techniques to your own job search.
Best of luck!
