Tip No. 153
Q. I've been an automobile technician for 15 years. I'm interested in going into the computer field which will require training. How can I find out exactly what I need as far as education goes? A. You will have to do some research to find out what kind of training or education you will need to enter the computer field. There are many colleges and universities that offer computer science degrees that would prepare you to enter the field. Also, you should investigate technical schools to see if you can get the necessary training to accomplish your goals. Some of these programs are shorter than full, four-year bachelor degree programs and may provide you with the preparation to be successful in reaching your goals. You may also be able to take online classes through schools like the University of Phoenix. So start with the schools in your area and find out what they offer. You should also talk to people who are already working in the field to see what kinds of work they are doing and what it takes to get into the field. People already working in the field will be your best resource for advice and guidance as to the necessary preparation, where the jobs are, and the trends of the future. You may want to pick up a copy of "What Color Is Your Parachute", by Richard Nelson Bolles for an in-depth description of how to go about gathering this type of information (otherwise known as networking).Best of luck to you!
