Tip No. 152

Q. I have a teleconference call regarding a potential job soon. Would you please tell me how to be successful in a phone interview?
A. A phone interview is not much different than a regular interview. You will have the disavantage of not being face-to-face for rapport-building purposes, so make sure to ask questions that show an interest in the interviewer and the position and get him/her talking. These will also help you determine their needs, which is one of your goals in any interview, so that you can show them how you are the human solution to their problems. Make sure you smile when you are talking, just like you would if you were meeting with them in person, and it will come through as friendliness and enthusiasm in your voice. The flip side is that you will have the advantage of being able to have notes in front of you to help you in answering their questions. I would suggest that you prepare a list of 5-10 questions that are job specific that you would expect them to ask you and prepare your answers to those questions as part of your preparation for the interview. Then have a friend help you practice answering those questions in a "mock" interview. You may even want to do this over the phone, so you get a feel for what your teleconference interview will be like. That way you should have all of the bases covered.

Best of luck to you!
