Tip No. 150
Q. I'm trying to get a job at an Ice Cream parlor. They will only hire ages 15 and over. Because I really need the job should I lie about my age and then tell the manager after I turn 15. A. It is never advisable to lie in order to get a job. In fact, if you are hired under false pretenses, your lie could be grounds for your dismissal. No one likes to be tricked or manipulated. I would recommend that you be honest with the manager. They may be willing to let you begin on a reduced schedule until you turn 15. You will probably want to check with the Employment Board in your state and the Department of Labor to find out what the laws are in relation to child labor, because there are restrictions placed upon employers about hiring people who are not yet adults. I would specifically check to see if there are any exceptions in the case of dire financial need on the part of the applicant. Your best bet may be to investigate other forms of employment that you can do on your own, such as babysitting or mowing lawns. Many teenagers find these activities great ways to make money.Best of luck to you!
