Tip No. 149
Q. I recently went for an interview where they asked, "What is the toughest management decision you have ever made?". I am interested in what themes you think are being tested by that question and would apreciate any advice you could provide. A. Typically when you experience these types of questions, you are dealing with a very skilled and savvy interviewer, who is interested in how you hold up under pressure. The interviewer wants to know how well you can think on your feet and also is trying to determine how you make "judgement calls" when you make decisions. The best way to be prepared for a stress interview, or any interview for that matter, is to do some research before interviewing so that you can learn what typical interview questions are and prepare and practice your answers to such questions. A good resource for this and for insight into interviewing and interviewers in general, is Martin Yate's "Knock 'EM Dead". This book is an excellent overall guide to job search and interviewing. It includes over 200 of the most frequently asked interview questions and sample answers to show you what the interviewer is looking for when they ask these types of questions. When faced with stress interview questions, you need to remain calm and show your analytical and problem solving abilities to illustrate that you are always thinking in terms of what will benefit the organization.Best of luck to you!
