Tip No. 148

Q. When I go for a job interview and present my resume, do I give that person my cover letter with my resume?
A. No, it is not necessary to present a cover letter with your resume when you are actually at the interview. The purpose of a cover letter is to grab someone's attention and direct them to your resume if they haven't already seen it (to get their attention, to get the interview). When you go for the job interview, do take copies of your resume, but do not offer it, unless you are specifically asked for it. The interviewer will usually already have a copy of it, either from the person who referred you or from your response to the advertised posting.

Best of luck to you!
