Tip No. 147

Q. I am the former President of a major oil and gas company subsidiary, and was recently downsized. I am exploring many options, one of which is consulting work. Do you know of any consulting firms that I might contact to develop a consulting/contract business? Where can I find information on consulting/contracting and resources for this type of work?
A. There are numerous consulting firms around the country that you could contact. You may want to pick up a copy of John Lucht's "Rites of Passage" and review the chapter that discusses executive consulting for some of the firm names and for some options you might explore in this area. You might also go to the library and ask the reference librarian to show you to the "Directory of Consulting Firms" which should be a great resource for you in finding firms that you may contract with to do consulting work. One of the first areas you should probably explore is the group of consulting/contracting firms that your former employer uses. I would assume that you already have a relationship with some of the people in these firms and that they would be very willing to assist you in exploring opportunities. They may also be interested in bringing you in as one of their consultants. There is also a great website that you will want to consult that gives contract employees and consultants guidance to building and making the most of their business. It is "The Contract Employee's Handbook" which you will find at cehandbook.com. Finally, of course, the best way to land contract positions is to network with your current contacts and educate them about what you are trying to do, get their suggestions and referrals, and follow-up on them.

Best of luck to you!
