Tip No. 142
Q. I am going to a large job fair and want to ask you if it is most appropriate to pass out the one-page summary resume or a two-page detailed resume during the job fair? Also, do I include volunteer work on my resume? A. For a career fair, the one-page resume would be most appropriate. Remember, research shows that resumes only get 7-30 seconds of review. You have got to catch their attention and hold it, and the one-page is ideal. As for your work with the Catholic church in Mexico, I would include it under EMPLOYMENT HISTORY, and state briefly (and without many/any religious references) what you did there. I too have done mission/evangelical work, but I can't know the views of the hiring individual(s), so I would not include it on my resume and/or bring it up in any spiritual detail in an interview. It is possible, however, to speak of the experience professionally. For example, you could state your title (if you did not have one, maybe use "volunteer"), the organization you worked through, the location and then list your job description as: Designed curriculum and instructed English courses for indigenous people in the Yucatan region. or Lead a team of volunteers in building homes and civic buildings for disadvantaged communities in Mexico City. Lastly, finish with the dates as such "(2001-2001)". Just like any other job listing you have on your resume.Best of luck to you!
