Tip No. 141
Q. I recently received a verbal job offer, but I've since been informed that the company will not be filling the position. What can I do? A. This happens more often than most people think. It is an unfortunate situation, but one that many job seekers may have to deal with in our uncertain economy, as companies struggle to survive. If you are asking about legal recourse, you may want to contact an employment attorney for advice on the matter. Chances are, unless you had a formal, written offer that both parties had already signed; the verbal offer is not a binding contract, but an attorney would be the best resource for this type of advice. Otherwise, the best you can do is learn from the situation and prepare to continue your job search. Try not to get discouraged and try not to take the rescinding of the offer personally. It is probably a function of the company's financial situation, rather than any failing on your part. One of the key lessons in this situation is that until you have a signed written offer and a start date, your job search is not over. So, as unfortunate as your circumstance is, you must get your courage and confidence up again and continue with the search.Best of luck to you!
