Tip No. 135

Q. I'm in desperate need of finding the right career for me but don't won't to waste too many years finding the correct one. The career test I have taken pointed me towards becoming a doctor. At age 26, do you think it's too late to go to med school?
A. Career and interest test results can be very helpful in giving us insight into possible career directions. But, no one knows you better than you know yourself!

Your email stated that the career test you took indicated you might do well as a doctor. Because you did not name the particular test you took, I cannot speak specifically about it. However, in general, career and interest tests categorize and group careers by their similar associated interests. These assessments evaluate interest and then link those to careers where there is an indication for potential success.

Your assessed interests likely linked you to doctor and several other careers in which you have the potential to be sucessful. I understand you not wanting to "waste too many years" in a career that is not a good fit. Life is too short! I would suggest that you visit with a career counselor -- perhaps one at your old college--and seek their guidance in researching other career options if you believe that doctor is not the right fit for you.

If being a doctor is your dream, it is never too late to try and make that happen. It is true that "average grades" might hinder admittance to medical school, but it does not mean it is out of the question for you. I look at it this way: you could be completing med school in 4 years or you could be four years older and wondering.

Best of luck to you!
