Tip No. 133
Q. I am an electronic engineer, with an MBA, currently working in Argentina. What is the best and fastest way to start a new career in North America? A. There are several schools of thought when a client is attempting to relocate to a different country. Obviously, one of the most common is to stay within the organization where you are currently employed. If this is not feasible, then you must begin your global job search just as you would a local one.First, network! You may be surprised to learn how many of your friends and colleagues know people in the States. Work through the steps logically. Make phone calls and follow up with letters. Contacts who may seem insignificant at the time could prove to be the most helpful.
Don't discount the internet. There are multi-national companies who post employment opportunities on-line. If you choose this route, remember that only 15% of job postings are found on the internet and in the newspapers combined! After submitting an application on-line, however, be sure to follow up with a hard copy of your cover letter and resume through the mail. Later, attempt to follow up by telephone to ensure its receipt.
Another avenue would be to investigate companies in your own country who are divisions of larger companies based in the United States. Physically visit the company and offer your credentials in application for employment.
As I'm sure you know, in order to work in the United States, you must have your papers in order. Many companies will be willing to provide those to you, but be sure to discuss this while negotiating your salary and benefits.
Best of luck to you!
