Tip No. 131
Q. How do I format a "Resume with salary history?" Is a salary history on a separate sheet or with the resume and how should it look? A. The answer to your question is that you don't format a resume with your salary history! Your resume is a brief summary of your career and your accomplishments and a brief introduction to who you are as an employee. It is a marketing tool and should not include salary information. When you are applying for or interviewing for a job, you should never divulge your past salary or your salary requirements, if you can avoid it. It is none of the interviewer's business what you were making in your previous positions and they should have a salary range established for the position they are trying to fill. If you must fill in salary history on an application, simply put a diagonal line through the box. If you are forced to give your salary requirements, you can write in something like "flexible" or "negotiable."
Often when you see a position advertised that requests salary history or requirements, there really is no position available; it is a salary survey! Many companies will post ads like this to find out what others in their industry have been paying for similar positions, so they know what range they need to be paying in order to stay competitive.
If you are interested in responding to one of these positions, I suggest you submit your cover letter and resume and disregard the salary request. If there is no position available, then you haven't lost anything. If there is a position and you are qualified, the company will most likely contact you if they are interested in you, whether you submit salary information or not. If there is a position, you have not negated your negotiating power by giving away your salary history or requirements.
Best of luck to you!
