Working Yourself to Death?

For Immediate Release
August 16, 1999

Black Monday Phenomenon...more fatal heart attacks occur on Monday morning about 9 am than at any other time of the week. Humans appear to be stressed and unhappy enough with their work that it causes hearts to break. Research shows that sudden death occurs at the beginning of the work week, not only because of the extra physical exertion that comes from the stress of transitioning from the weekend couch to the Monday rush hour, but also because of the emotional distress of returning to a job that brings too little happiness according to the HEW and American Medical Association.

Terry Devlin, a licensed professional counselor with Career Management International, a human resources counseling and consulting firm, advises clients to seek relief from stress by finding an activity that is totally engrossing. "It really doesn't matter what you enjoy; jogging or bowling... what is important is that your activity provides the 'flow experience'. The 'flow experience' can be compared to what athletes refer to as 'being in the zone'. Flow is the exhilarating and reinvigorating feeling of being 'in the moment' and being 'one with your environment'. The more passionate people become about their recreation, the more balanced their lives are likely to be."

Furthermore, remember the reason you are working; define your work and describe it to others by its purpose , not by its task. When work is your purpose in life your work will never be done. Don't work at your job...Enjoy your job's purpose and do your best to fulfill the objective of your working. Work gently not hard: return calls; only handle paper once; phone home; don't spread rumors, and compliment others as much as possible.
