Fifty years ago the word stress was used to refer to objects such
as steel and concrete, but today stress costs employers $150
billion annually in terms of lost hours due to absenteeism,
reduced productivity, and workers' compensation. We all pay a
stress tax whether we know it or not. Currently, health care
costs account for approximately 12 percent of the gross domestic
product, which continues to escalate yearly. According to the
Marketdata Enterprises survey on stress, $9.4 billion is the
estimated value of all stress management services provided to the
corporate world. Stress management programs are currently offered
at 37% of the nationžs worksites and the goal of the federal
government is make stress management programs available to 40% of
worksites by the year 2000.
