Don't Let the Dog Days of Summer Make Dog Days of Your Job Search

For Immediate Release
July 23, 1997

Now may be the lazy days of summer but job seekers can't let that attitude slow down job search. In fact, summer months offer ideal times to look for a career transition or new position. Career counselors at Career Management International (CMI), who are working with more than 500 separating employees of the Dow Chemical Company in Freeport, Texas, believe that their clients will be reemployed quickly. In fact, a number of the salaried workers have already found jobs at higher salaries.

Consider these factors: July begins a new fiscal year and budget. This often makes money available to fund projects that require additional employees. Temporary positions are available since professionals and skilled workers are needed to fill in for vacationing employees. Additionally, employment agencies get requests for last-minute replacements during the summer. The number of help wanted ads might fall during the summer, but so do the number of responses and employers are still eager to fill positions. Lots of networking situations like barbecues, club activities and church outings also take place during the summer months that can produce valuable contacts.

"Don't vacation from looking for a job this summer", says Terry Devlin, one of CMI's licensed counselors. "Just because many people equate summer months with slow periods for business and job opportunities it is not necessarily the case. Job hunters should take this time to expand their networking and interviewing efforts." One of CMI's clients, who had told his counselor that he "really wanted to take a month off after his termination", has found that the lure of interviewing has kept him busy. In fact, he is currently trying to decide which of three job offers he has received is best for him and his family.
