How Long Will You Work?

Baby boomers destroy the retirement myth

For Immediate Release
July 13, 1998

Based on thousands of clients that Career Management International (CMI) has provided career transition services for over the last 20 years, a trend is emerging which shows that retirees want to have their cake and eat it too! Retirees indicate that they are not ready to desert the job market, but are looking for ways to live active, vital and rewarding lives without necessarily working full time. These findings also support an AARP sponsored survey which reveals that 80 percent of America's largest generation, 76 million folks born between 1946 and 1964 and known as the "baby boomers", plan to work at least part time when they retire. Only 5% of this population sees a full-time job in their retirement future, but 90% are concerned about how to make their money last as long as possible, believing that they will need more money for retirement than their parents required. Approximately 75% of the boomers also see retirement as a time to pursue interests and hobbies and spend more time with their families.

For boomers to realize their future plans, changes must occur in the workplace. Companies will have to provide mid career training opportunities to allow these valuable resources to continue increasing their productivity. A fraction of Fortune 1000 companies have programs set-up to develop strengths, but the trend for career development is becoming evident.

Terry Devlin, a career counselor for CMI says, "People don't want to stagnate. Each of us has a deep need to use our talents and abilities in interesting and rewarding ways. However, some retirees have a fear of jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire. The challenge lies in finding "just the right fit", either as a new position within their current company or a position in a different company. "
