The Ups and Downs of Downsizing

For Immediate Release
June 23, 1997

The economy is supposedly on the upswing but companies continue downsizing and rightsizing. After a decade of change in the workplace, workers still like their jobs but are unprepared for layoffs. Statistics say that in order for preparation for a job loss, you should have 3 months salary in savings. Four in every 10 of workers polled admit they are not prepared financially to deal with a job loss.

Evidence that downsizing is harmful without innovative and special purpose interventions, also continues to mount. Research by the American Management Association reveals that disability claims increase by 70% among companies that eliminate jobs, not only among employees whose jobs were cut, but among those who remain with the company. In the short term layoffs benefit budgets, however, the employees going through these corporate changes often experience more depression, substance abuse, anxiety, and nervous breakdowns.

Career Management International (CMI) provides programs for employees being laid off to help with reemployment and survivor training which assists the remaining employees in staying productive and healthy. One of CMI's licensed professional counselors, Terry Devlin, says "Companies who provide special programs and counseling for their downsized employees, and equally as important, their "surviving" employees, stand a much better chance of having the downsized employees find new jobs quickly without experiencing severe psychological reactions while at the same time keeping survivor morale high." President Susan Silvano adds, "Change is never easy, but once individuals start participating in their own career transformation, they gain a sense of control over their lives."
