The Spiritual Side of Stress

For Immediate Release
May 26, 1997

Mark Niles, co-presenter of workplace stress reduction seminars, recently stated, "Unless employees begin to develop their spiritual side and unless organizations support an environment which fosters that spiritual development, workers will continue to experience increased levels of stress and decreased levels of productivity." Niles, a regional manager for Career Management InternationalÆ, (CMI), cited the growing trend for organizations to expect the same amount of work to be done by fewer and fewer people. He continually asks this question of his seminar participants, "Where do you think that extra energy is going to come from?"

"It can only come from spirituality!" Niles explained, "Spirituality should not be confused with organized religion. Instead, spirituality is an understanding that there is a force that runs through the universe which each of us can call on and use if we put the physical, emotional and mental sides of our lives into proper balance." Niles concluded, "More and more individuals are taking an active and responsible part in determining their roles in the workplace of the future by achieving balance in their personal and professional lives. This is good for the individual as well as the organization."

CMI provides a number of programs that assist individuals and organizations to adopt and foster an environment allowing spiritual development. Training is provided by counselors on either an individual or group basis, after an assesment of the specific needs of the individuals and the organization determines the most effective methods of implementation. Employees find that learning new coping techniques increases productivity while actually lessening personal and group stress levels.
