For Immediate Release
May 19, 1999

Career Management InternationalÆ (CMI) and the Texas Engineering Extension System (TEEX) have partnered with funding supplied by The Texas Workforce Commission to provide program models to assist welfare recipients who have been out of the workforce for a number of years to get back to work. Under the plan CMI provides career transition and job search services to clients and their families, assessment to help welfare clients gain insight into their own personalities and preferences and employee assistance programs which provide support to clients and their families even after they have become employed. CMI also assists the sponsoring employers of welfare client to help them match client strengths with the employer's needs.

TEEX provides clients with time compressed employment preparation including training for non traditional employment roles such as heavy equipment and crane operation and welding. TEEX's "worksite buddies" and job coaches mentor clients and acquaint them with accepted workplace practices. TEEX also provides expanded support services such as dependent care, transportation, and wake-up services to clients as necessary.

Angelika Reiss, a counselor for CMI who is working with the welfare clients in the career transition model says "It is very exciting to see the clients confidence build as they prepare their resumes and get ready to get back into the workplace. One of the clients has already landed a new opportunity and it has been an encouragement to others in the group."

Recruitment of welfare clients by TEEX for the Employee Pipeline Model will take place in Houston, Dallas and San Antonio. Comprehensive evaluation of the program, to show how clients' lives have been changed by participating in the project, will serve as a blueprint for further projects. This first model is expected to serve approximately 250 clients.
