Are You Making Yourself Sick?

For Immediate Release
March 17, 1997

Many psychologists believe that the majority of our physical maladies are actually the expression of psychological distress. While that may sound a bit far-fetched, the physical expressions of stress are certainly recognizable. Some symptoms include tension headaches, lower back pain and leg pain. Stress is also known to contribute to gastrointestinal problems, sleep problems, and even allergy symptoms.

Physicians are well aware of illness as a problem solving strategy. In fact, some health care experts estimate that 30% of all patients who see specialists have no detectable illness. Apparently many of us "learn to cope with" life problems by becoming ill. Career Management International, a provider of employee assistance programs for the last ten years, supports a study by Brigham Young University showing that healthcare visits drop after a patient receives therapy for emotional concerns. For clients, who received either individual, family or marriage counseling, healthcare visits for medical problems dropped an average of 21.5 %. For individuals who received no therapy, the healthcare visits actually rose almost 11% during the same time period.

What does this mean?....Perhaps industry leaders should take another look at providing more mental health and wellness programs that address the every day stresses of maintaining a successful career and successful home life. These programs can provide employees with reality based life management techniques to promote a healthy total lifestyle balance.
