Father Time Marches On Don't let him trample you!

For Immediate Release
December 22, 1997

Father Time is about to complete his march. If you are employed and under 50 no big deal; the job market is good and there are a variety of opportunities. Over 50 - early baby boomer and back in the job market, that could be a different story. What does the older job candidate need to succeed?

Terry Devlin, a career counselor at Career Management International, (CMI) offers a few suggestions: 1) Plan on using your expansive network to land a new position. Most people in their thirties have a large network, but imagine how much your networking contacts are at 50 plus! 2) Talk to referrals in all walks of life. Act confidently and never assume that you can't learn something new. 3) Don't panic and don't accept a job quickly. Be selective. 4) Network with professional colleagues, peers, neighbors and friends, but never ask "Do you have a job for me"? It is highly unlikely that you will get a positive response. Instead, say you are "seeking information" and ask if they have heard about any openings or someone who might know about openings. 5) Don't be afraid to talk about your career accomplishments. Quantify the results of your achievements and practice your delivery. 6) Check opportunities at small firms. Many times these employers do not have time to develop experience and must go outside the company to find it. 7) Look your best and choose some kind of physical activity which not only reduces stress, but reduces some of those extra pounds you might have added. 8) Be positive and enthusiastic. Let others know how you can help meet their goals. Remember, being 50 plus makes you more desirable than you might think. You have years of experience to share and by letting employers know your unique ability to help meet their goals, you may have to consider multiple offers!
