For Immediate Release
October 6, 1997
School counselors charged with providing job placement, case
management and alternative education services in 10 Houston area
schools came together on Friday, October 2, for training on
Career Management International's (CMI) School-To-Work
Box™. In the session counselors received experiential
education in helping students to: assess their interests,
abilities and strengths; build skill based resumes and learn
interviewing and soft networking techniques so they can
successfully access the "hidden job market". As part of
the $2.8 million, Youth Opportunities Program (YO!) or
"Kulick Project", CMI's school to work materials and
training contribute to the overall goal of increasing the
employment rate among youth. Locally the program is administered
by Houston Works and the Employment and Training Centers
(E&TC).
Terry Devlin, CMI¼s career counselor said, "The staff at Employment and Training Centers (E&TC) really took to the training and especially enjoyed their "trip to the mall" experience at lunch time." The "trip to the mall", a CMI exclusive, guides job seekers of all ages through the networking process in a non-threatening, familiar environment.
Melba Hamilton, Program Coordinator for E&TC adds, "This training is a true value added to our effort with these disadvantaged youth from the Fifth Ward and Northside areas. Our staff has now improved their skills in delivering meaningful one-on-one and group career transitioning education to our most important clients....the students".
