Career Management International (CMI) and BMC Software (BMC)
recently partnered to provide BMC employees with presentation
skills that enable them to effectively make presentations to
a variety of audiences. While most employers think only sales
people or those on the front line need presentation skills, BMC
realizes the importance of this skill and asked CMI to help teach
their employees how to get their ideas across in a positive
manner. The ability to make presentations to peers and bosses, to
effectively communicate information, perhaps convince team
members of a new direction to take, or even to consider a new
idea, is a career development tool that BMC wanted their workers
to have.
Employees first learn to establish rapport in front of a group by developing a series of questions to discover needs. Using positive visualization and developing platform skills such as posture, gestures, tonal quality, humor, enthusiasm, and use of visual aids, participants learn how to capture their audiences, identify their needs, offer solutions and translate those solutions to business benefits.
Each participant is video taped during their practice presentations and delivery is critiqued by Terry Devlin, a CMI counselor. Terry also maintains that, "The ability to establish rapport quickly is pivotal to the success of a presentation. Research indicates that a speaker has only 4 minutes in which to establish rapport which will keep the listener's interest."
