Career Management InternationalÆ (CMI) provided career
transition services to 80 employees affected by the closing of
the LAS Laboratories in Las Vegas, Nevada. LAS Laboratories, a
division of SPL Laboratories based in Houston, Texas,
unexpectedly closed their doors for operation on January 19, 1998
and contracted with CMI to present information instructing the
separating employees how to find new jobs in the marketplace.
Richard Silvano, CMI's executive vice president, lead a team of 6 CMI counselors who assisted employees affected by the laboratory closing. Individual resumes were prepared and both networking and marketing skills were taught in an intensified two day career transition course. Approximately 98% of the employees attended the seminars and more than 10% had job offers before the end of the second day. CMI success rate of 96% for successful career closure stems from an individualized and efficient approach to the career transition process and is unprecedented in the outplacement industry.
LAS performed highly technical testing of organic materials and metals and employed scientists, chemists, microbiologists and laboratory assistants. Although officials at LAS regretted the closure and hoped that all the workers affected would find new employment quickly, the reason for the laboratory closing could not be confirmed by SPL officials in Houston. Richard Silvano of CMI says, "Although change is never easy these folks worked hard during the career transition classes and their chances for securing new positions are excellent."
