Access to Government Markets ...

With panelist Deirdre Magee!

HOUSTON - (September 21, 2004) Deirdre Magee, Vice President of Operations with Career Management International, Inc. (CMI), served as a panelist for the National Women's Business Council's (NWBC) roundtable discussion on Access to Government Markets, focusing on the role of Federal Offices of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization (OSDBUs).

On September 13, 2004 in Washington, DC the NWBC held a Roundtable Discussion on "Accessing Government Markets", focusing on how best to utilize OSDBUs. During the roundtable discussion, members of the National Women's Business Council heard from both women business owners about their experiences -- good and bad -- with Federal Offices of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization, and from agency OSDBU officials about their efforts to support successful access to government markets by Women Owned Businesses.

The Roundtable was moderated by Council member, Susan Wilson Solovic and featured a panel of federal OSDBU representatives from NAVSEA, Department of Homeland Security, Department of Agriculture, and NASA and a second panel of women business owners to include Ms. Magee, CMI, Dr. Mildred Boyd, EduTech, and Claire Gastanaga, CG2 Consulting.

The OSDBU panel representatives presented information on the role of the OSBDU officials and their efforts to support successful access to government markets by Women Owned Businesses. The panel of women business owners presented their firm's individual experiences and unique challenges as women owned businesses in applying for federal sector contract schedules and in competitively bidding for and securing federal contracting opportunities.

Ms. Magee responded to the Council's questions and concerns about the capability and capacity of small women owned businesses to successfully compete for federal sector business. Many women owned businesses find it difficult to navigate the federal red tape and bureaucracy and to take on the expense of applying for a federal schedule, particularly if consultant help is required. Ms. Magee shared CMI's approach and process in obtaining its schedule award through GSA Advantage and explained the role of Pro-Net as a contracting vehicle for CMI's current federal contracts. Ms. Magee and other panel members emphasized the importance of networking and relationship building with the federal OSBDU representatives and the importance of attending OSDBU sponsored events and forums. The OSBDU representatives emphasized that partnering and teaming with larger companies in a subcontracting role can offer an initial entree into the federal sector market.

All of the issues and challenges raised by the Council and panel members served to inform the Council's mission to provide public policy advice and counsel to the President, U.S. Congress, and the U.S. Small Business Administration.
