Industry Concerns Addressed at Houston Human Resource Panel
Career Management International, Inc. was a proud participant in a recent Houston area meeting of Human Resource professionals. A panel of experts in the area of Human Resources, including CMI's own Executive Career Counselor Carol Giardina, led the discussions related to HR industry concerns.
Topics included an assessment of the troubled Houston job market, career management strategies for HR professionals experiencing lay-offs, and career advice for recent entries into the HR field. Audience members had the opportunity to ask specific questions of the panel which led to some important insights.
One audience member, an HR executive in the Houston Metroplex, stated that "The job market is tight for HR professionals! There appears to be an abundance of professionals for very few positions. HR Specialists are still in demand when positions open up, but there is not an abundance of that type of HR talent, especially HR organizational-development. It was reinforced to me that combining an HR undergraduate degree with another discipline such as accounting is very favorable for my prospects. Most importantly, I learned that the more skills and diversity I can showcase, the better my marketability!" The panel concurred that there is a premium placed on advanced degrees, MBA's for example, in the financial disciplines such as economics, accounting and finance, and a Master's in HR Management.
Giardina summed up the event by saying, "It has been said that the jobs are disappearing but the work continues. This is so true in today's job market We spoke about everyone needing to be aware of potential vulnerability in their current career. Each of us needs to be prepared to market our strengths in the event of a career transition. There were great follow-up questions from the audience, and I think this audience is much more equipped to focus their efforts on success in the job market."
