Electrical Power Industry Leaders Make Impressive Gains in Best Practices for Diversity and Inclusion ...

HOUSTON - (July 30, 2004) As a premier supplier of services to corporate human resource organizations, Houston-based Career Management International routinely monitors the progress of industries it supports.

That was true during the 2004 Edison Electric Institute Annual Convention/Expo held June 6-9 in Orlando, Florida, where more than 600 chief executives and other industry leaders gathered.

The targeted areas of discussion included major business and leadership issues, such as diversity. The panel focusing on diversity issues featured participants from leading energy companies, including CenterPoint Energy, Duke Energy and Georgia Power.

David McClanahan, President and CEO of CenterPoint Energy, highlighted the company's programs for diversity in their workforce, their vendors, and the community. "One way CenterPoint has supported diversity is through their woman/minority owned business policy, which has been in place since the mid 1980's," McClanahan said. "Using woman/minority owned companies is not a philanthropic concept. It makes good business sense for CenterPoint because these companies must be able to produce to do business with us." McClanahan described increasing spending with diversity suppliers by quoting statistics of total contracting dollars spent as 5.2% in 2002, 8/2% in 2003, and 10% to be spent in 2004.

Ruth Shaw, President of Duke Energy spoke about her company's top-down commitment to diversity and inclusion. Shaw stated, "Duke has a diversity council at the enterprise level that takes respect for the individual seriously as a key business value."  As part of their best practices efforts, Duke supports professional internal networks such as their business women's network, minority professional organization and leadership development network.  Shaw went on to mention that many of the current activities at Duke are recommended by the employees themselves.

All Panel members cited diversity management as a critical issue in building a world class organization.

Susan Silvano, president of CMI said, "CMI partners with organizations to achieve their diversity goals through training and measurement of progress. Our customized Kingdomality training programs provide the tools an organization needs to affect change in order to impact diversity issues.."
