Associates at Career Management International, Inc. (CMI) are proud to help the Houston Area Women's Center (HAWC) by donating their used cell phones to Verizon Wireless HopeLine phone recycling program. Donated phones are tested and cleaned then programmed to dial 911, providing a much needed comfort and safety resource. Designed to help protect abused women and children in emergency domestic violence situations, a woman in an abusive situation has only to push one number to receive help.

Jennifer Silvano, Research Coordinator at CMI, is organizing fundraising efforts for CMI on behalf of HAWC and says, "these phones are often used by shelter residents who hesitate leaving the shelter to run errands for fear of running into an abusive partner. This is such a simple and effective way to help."

The HAWC states on their website, http://www.hawc.org:

"Today, sexual assault and abuse of an intimate partner are illegal everywhere in the United States. Despite this, there is still much societal tolerance of violence against women. As a result, abuse of women in this country today remains under-reported, rarely prosecuted and largely ignored by those persons, groups and agencies best able to end violence against women. HAWC's mission is to end this violence against women by educating the community and providing counseling and shelter to the survivors."

CMI employees support the efforts of the HAWC to assist victims of domestic violence through shelter, support and practical information about their options and an opportunity to interact with others who understand their situation. CMI Counselor Kathy Bowersox said, "HAWC strives to enable each woman to make independent and informed decisions about her future. By giving women alternatives to living with domestic violence, HAWC services allow women to make these decisions and to build their self-esteem."

For anyone needing assistance from the HAWC, the Domestic Violence Hotline is (713)528-2121 and the Sexual Assault Hotline is (713)528-7273.
