Career Management International's Falls Church, VA office recently hosted a federal sector "Lunch and Learn" session for HR executives in the Intelligence Community. The session, held at The Tower Club at Tysons Corner, featured key note speaker, Dr. Gary Huckaby, of CMI's Huntsville, Alabama office, and Brock Boyd, President of Career Management, Inc., a noted recruitment firm located in Northern VA.

The 2 and 1/2 hour session focused on organizational challenges and opportunities in managing the future of the federal workforce; strategies to address critical skills mix concerns; and provided helpful tips on how to systematically improve recruitment, hiring, and retention. CMI facilitated the dynamic information exchange.

HR executives expressed considerable concern about the impact of the aging workforce on the Intelligence Community's ability to bring critical talent and expertise to bear on the challenges presented by the war on terrorism. Statistics indicate that the aging, or as it has been titled in various publications, "The Graying of the Federal Workforce" means that more than 30% of people working for key agencies within the intelligence Community will be eligible for retirement by the year 2006.

Dr. Huckaby and Brock Boyd outlined effective tips for workforce planning, including creative retention strategies, and also presented potential tools, products, and services to assist organizations in workforce planning. They explained how such resources can help agencies to implement and enable systematic workforce planning to take hold. It was agreed that the implications are severe -- unless workforce planning takes hold, agencies will be left with serious skills gaps.

Deirdre Magee, CMI executive in the Northern Virginia office said this of the event: "Our objective was to learn more about the work force planning challenges in the Intelligence Community, and to share our knowledge and expertise of best business practices, resulting from our extensive work in corporate America, academia and the federal, state, and local government sectors."

Speaker Dr. Gary Huckaby added, "We opened our Northern Virginia office two years ago to meet the needs of federal sector organizations in the metro area. Our company certifications include: Registered Vendor on the Department of Defense Central Contractor Registry, as well as an Approved Vendor on the GSA Advantage, Corporate Contracts Schedule. This makes it very easy for the HR executives we met with, as well as others in the federal sector to find us on e-library.gov and procure our service offerings."
